Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & JSA

Introduction:

Some hazards are obvious to any observer looking for them, but many work hazards are not at all obvious. In some cases, people get so used to their workplaces that they develop 'blind spots' to potential dangers. In other instances, hazards may be hard to spot because they do not have immediate effects (e.g., noise and some poisons). Some hazards only become apparent when special operations (e.g., maintenance and cleaning) are being carried out. Even when an accident has happened, observers may be looking so hard at what the victim was 'doing wrong' that they fail to spot defects in the system of work itself. A systematic approach is required to identify those hazards & then assess the risks involved. Similar assessments, but on a job scale (JSA), provide information of the hazards involved in each job steps and their mitigation measures.
